But the usual home filter choice for modern forced air furnace and central air units is either MERV 8 or MERV 11 (see chart of basic differences MERV 6-13 at bottom):

Lowe's and Home Depot do NOT carry a 16x24x1 filter, but there are lots on Amazon - cheaper than similar sizes at Lowe's and Home Depot - and finding a "MERV 10" replacement was easy. I found the installation and technical manuals online for my Goodman 92% efficiency, 70,000 BTU, Furnace Model GKS90703BX with reduced nitrogen oxides emissions, and they say nothing about which MERV rating to use, The Goodman website says MERV 8 or above. But this is what I got from many web tutorials: I haven't become an expert after an evening plus a morning's online research, checking out what MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) ratings are good and how much the higher ratings restrict air flow. Now I'm on the 2nd of 4 paper air filters that were supplied with my air conditioning and furnace.

I was happy just to get the filter and never bothered to check any filtration ratings. My old furnace had an unusual size air filter, used only for heat - no central air - and I had to buy it in boxes of 24 at an industrial supply place.
